LaCie F.A. Porsche 320 GB External Hard Drive

At comp to the usa (compusa) a 160 lacie external hardrive cost $130. Lacie is a pretty good company. My last Lacie was dropped on asphault from probably 5ft up and still worked. The only problem with this is there is not firewire which is much faster but i am using it for my xbox 360 so I dont care
The Lucie external drive was installed and is now a complete part of my PC. It is used to store my pictures taken over the years and any data that I want to protect. I am perfectly satisfied. Tom Baird
I was pleased with the product because It works faster than i anticipated. It makes almost no sound at all. Only when all other sound is off you can hear a slight hum.
It's no use to predict how a hard drive will perform down the road past three months of course, and by the time you read the 'down the road' reviews, it'll likely be undersized for your needs.
Regardless, this is a nice plug and play (no drivers needed, literally plug in and go on XP) drive with more than enough room to back up most peoples complete machines with 300gb+ of usable space. I reformatted it to NTFS w/o problem. It's a Hitachi drive; they've been very reliable in my experience. I'm using it to back up both my home server and laptop with room to spare. It's USB 2.0 only, so would be slow for everyday access use. It's the perfect backup drive though for now.
I am concerned when a manufacturer offers no warranty. This product requires that you buy a warranty? When a manufacturer can't stand behind their product i'm a little concerned.
I guess it is naive, and maybe everyone already knows this, but just in case I thought I'd drop a line to say that it works fine to back up all my stuff even though it shows up as MS DOS (that scares me) and I have a laptop with OS X.
It kind of freaks me out that it says MS DOS, and that might turn Mac people off, but I bought this unit because I heard good things from my Mac-only friends.
I dumped 700 images, 300 papers and about 4000 mp3s onto this thing and I still have tons of room for more stuff.
Set up easy. Works fine out of the box. No problems at all.
The drive is very adequet, USB 2 not a zippy as firewire obvioisly but all and all is is a really good deal.
Works fine with my iBook and fits well on my desk in a neat stack with another external hard drive. Holds a ton of my writing and music. I'm very happy with my purchase.
The hard drive has been working great for me. I the included software has not been very useful. I wanted to mirror my MacBook hard drive but it does not have capabilities to do that. The software is slow compared to what I found for free on the interenet.
So far so good, great hard drive. It runs and works most like any other hard drive I've had but, it's the look that puts this one above the rest. Very smooth sleek design, looks great anywhere.
Fast delivery even though deployed in Iraq!
Lacie FA Porche 320GB is sleek and nicly designed product. The best thing is its read and write speed. It takes less than 3min. to write 4GB of data.
The on off button is very handy, by this you can plugin this hard drive at your will.
Standard shipping just cost me only 122$. That's a really good deal.
Arrived quickly. Just plugged right up to my Apple G5 and transfered 160GB of music within minutes. Fast and reliable so far. I feel i should have bought the 500GB.
it is a plug and play device , nice to have something that works like the manf. said it would
This drive looks great and is quite stylish, however, the manual/instructions for using the pre-installed software are terrible and while I seem to have successfully both of my small hard disks on to this drive, I have no idea how I can view them or how to restore them if I lost my files. When I click on the new drive, I can see that 170GB have been used up, but there is no sign of any files on the drive.
I previously purchased a 100 GB LaCie Porsche external drive and it has functioned perfectly for nearly a year and a half. I needed a larger drive to store both my music and picture libraries, therefore, after researching the current external drive market, I decided to purchase another Lacie Porsche. For the approximately $120 dollar price, you can't go wrong with the 320 GB F. A. Porsche model. The drive is extremely quiet and the transfer of data files is very reliable. The power on/off button and corresponding indicator LED could be positioned a little better (on the same end of the drive) and the connecting cable could be a little longer, but these are minor issues. I would highly recommend this drive to anyone who wants a great external drive at a great price.
im not a computer whiz, and i know there are some system information things that need to be stored on hard drives that take up some space, but I just got this drive today and the max capacity is 298 GB. 22 GB seems like alot for system data. Oh, and the USB wire it comes with is very short. Probably a foot long.
Works wonderfully. Great Price. Easy to transport and built solid.
unlike most tech gadgets that are a little outdated, this product stands in nearly every aspect. The sleek, supreme design by F.A. Porsche makes this product appearance timeless, and its preformance is outstanding, more effective in this model than its smaller, slower (80Gb, 120 Gb) counterparts. The autostart is a little slow for me (its the USB model, not firewire, remeber), but is a totally acceptable feature for the price, design & performance cost-benefit equilibrium. Excellent purchase.
I bought this hard drive after researching a few different ones. This is by far the best price and best hard drive around. I have had Zero problems with this one. I am a newbie so to speak and bought it to put my music and a few games, pics etc. Lifesaver for my little laptop hard drive. A must for people who need a lot of extra space for little money. You plug it in and that is it.
LaCie has been one of my most favorite brands, since I have done numerous Lab reimaging annually and they keep on going. If you do not have a backup of your data, get this NOW and do it. Lately I've seen 15+ drive failures (clickers and screechers) at work, Dell, hp/compact, gateway, all the same ... None of the owners had a backup. Drives must be reaching their MTTF (Mean Time To Failure).
The drive has been working well so far and is part of my backup (S)torage (A)rea (N)etwork. Works well under windows & linux ~[Ubuntu].
There might be bigger drivers for the same price, but don't be coaxed by it.

solid for the warratny period and then the hard drive wont kick in when you plug it in and want to get your data back. it hums but the usb is never recognized. i dont know if data is lost or just inaccesible.
Not only does this hard drive have a sleek and simplistic design, it provides the sufficient storage space that I'm looking for.
I bought the 320GB model, and it appears to be working fine right now (2 days after opening the package).
One thing I noticed was the small size. Although the product specification lists an obnoxiously large square-ish device, the actual measurements are more like: 7.5" x 4" x 1.5", 2 lbs.
On the other hand, this hard drive seems to heat up rather quickly, but only if transferring data for extended periods of time. Otherwise, it stays lukewarm and purrs quietly in the background.
Another drawback is the extreeeeemely short USB cable that is provided, something like 1 foot. Needless to say, it's sort of awkward to try to position the hard drive with such a small cable.
As something to keep in mind, a computer or peripheral will usually fail either within the first 24 hrs or when approaching the end of its lifespan. Once you use the device for 48hrs, chances are it'll work fine for the next few years.
I bought this because of the great reviews and the low price. So far (only about a month that I had) it seems ok and reliable. But there are a few things I noticed right away that could have been better. These are minor, but they do exist in other externals and could have made this better.
1-The usb cable they provide is the worst I have ever seen. It is probably 2 feet at best, and soooo thin (about the size of a human hair. not really that thin, but much thinner then any usb cable I have ever seen).
2-The on/off is a button you push it. Not too easy to notice the contact. This is annoying and can cause problems. I much better solution is a swith that makes it easy to see on and off.
3-No stand, but i guess just putting it on the side works. It might fall over easier then others with stands though. It only has the rubber feet on the long edge, so if you dare put it on the side, it can side off much easier.
4-The Transfer light kinda sucks and is small/ not noticable. Plus, if you stand the drive up on the side, the light is on the bottom, which makes it even less able to be seen.
Mostly a good drive. I think my expectations were better because of the reviews. I know most people review the actual data transfer and sound (which is most important). These are god with this drive and why I gave it a 4. But it really doesn't deserve a 5 yet.
I was pleased to get the LaCie F.A. Porsche 320gb external hard drive for under $100. I plugged it in, the usb cord was included, and it came up just fine on my computer. My only problem came when I actually tried to use the back-up software included. The software isn't worth the disc it was burned onto. It kept telling me I didn't have enough room on the hard drive to back-up. Considering the Lacie hard drive is 4 times larger than my computer's hard drive that was not even an option. I reformatted to see if it just wasn't recognizing the space and that didn't help either. I gave up on the software, backed up through Sonic and had no problem.
I would buy the hard drive again and definitely recommend it to others (especially if you get the under $100 deal), but don't bother unpacking the software.
exactly the external hard drive that I was looking for
everything was ok.
i got my product on time and works perfectly.
Yeah... Looks really cool, sort of. Bought it through orfice depot and boy, that's when the trouble started. Website says in stock, ships tomorrow. Turns out they had to special order it from the factory and it takes 2 weeks. Project was due friday so the drive would have been useless to me. Called the tech depot number - get some dude in the Philippines who can't cancel the order because it's a special factory order. (I placed the order like 10 minutes earlier.) Asked to talk to his supervisor - he says he doesn't have one. Call the number again the next day and this time I get somewhere in the Caribbean. This gal from Orfice depot does have a supervisor but won't transfer me or give me the name.
So I go to techdepot website and no way to contact anyone in the US so I just copy and paste every email address I can find out of their "Contact Us" section - even the website admin, furniture group, government sales, marketing, you name it. I explain the ordeal with the call center people who apparently have no supervisors and ask "Can someone please call me or give me a number of someone with a supervisor.
So finally after I get a bunch of "form" emails telling me to call tech depot ??? Someone actually emails and says hey, we'll try to stop the order but if we can't just refuse it. So this is for a business and I can't go hit everyone up in the mail room and tell them to refuse this thing out of the 1000's of packages we get every day so I just finally give up and figure I'll eat the $109 and use the drive for something else.
Get the drive, plug it in, terrible howling sound out of it. It works fine though. Write some data to it, it's OK. Then a couple weeks later I try writing again. Nothing. No power lite, no sound, nothing. Call Lacie -the only positive thing I can say about them is their tech support is in Oregon. Good guy, speaks english, sends me a new power supply next day. Still doesn't work. So I call Lacie again and they say, "OK, we'll fix the drive but you have to send it back to us at your expense." By this time I was so fed up I just gave up. It cost me more of my time to try and get this thing fixed than it was worth. Never will buy anything Lacie again and doub't I'll buy anything from Orfice Depot either.
This was so simply, just plug in USB port and your ready to go.
I've had this for about a month now, and it's worked great (I'm still a little wary after my previous external drive crashed on me). It's a bit clunky, and I'm not crazy about having to plug it in separately, but it's so nice to have 300 GB of extra space to work with. It's a great value for the drive size and price.
Easy to use and set up. Just plug and play. Makes storage and backup simple and takes away the excuse that "oops, I forgot to back that up" a thing of the past.
I am happy with this purchase and have recommended that my company purhcase these for our employee use. Fast access with a slim design.
This is a good way to store high memory items such as video and backup files. Be careful about the length of the name of the files. Overall, I am satisfied.
Product works great. My only complaints are the start button is small and in the back of the unit and the software is not that great.
What's to say? It holds lots of data and it looks nice on the desk.
A few comments, though, are worth making:
1. It has a separate power supply. The other USB drives I have get power from the USB port on my computer. Adding this drive made me exceed the number of plugs on my power strip and made me find a place for the power brick, which is slightly larger than the power supply on my Lenovo laptop. This also means that you have to remember to turn it off separately from the PC.
2. It gets pretty warm. Since I use it primarily for backup of my computers, this is not a problem. I just turn it off when the backup is finished.
3. I wish the USB cable were a little longer. It's about 18" total, and my desk arrangement is such that a longer cord would have made for more convenient placement.
4. There's a power button on the back. I'd have preferred it on the front. Maybe Porsche Design wanted a smoother look. The only thing on the front panel is a tiny in-use LED.
5. The backup software that comes with it is a pain to use. Fortunately for me, I have BounceBack Pro that came with a CMS drive that I bought last year. Just remember that BounceBack formats the drive the first time you make a backup.
6. The drive is very good looking - about the size of a paperback book with a stainless steel finish.
7. Price - about $100 for 320GB - is a bargain. I suppose prices will continue to fall, but I figured I was waiting myself into never having one, so I bought now.
In summary, I can recommend this product with confidence.
Don't advertise for 320 GB if you're planning to sell 298GB harddisk. It works fine sofar (a month old right now)otherwise.
it has done the job i wanted and at a much lower cost than retail stores. i probably could have held out for a little more bang for my buck, but overall i think it was a great buy
its a fine product, i just wasn't expecting the need for it to be plugged into a wall for use.
Works great. Faster than I thought it might be with USB2. $100 is well worth the price. Real peace of mind knowing I've got my entire HD backed-up.
You can do your own homework, but I looked for hours and couldn't find a better deal than this anywhere.
Everything is very good. Fast, dependable. But the power plug into the drive is a little strange, and doesn't fit well. The power button in the back is hard to reach. Other than that is is sleek, has been dependable, and the metal case sucks the heat off the drive. I use it for video editing and no problems.
I am very pleased with the hard drive. It was just
plug and go! I feel more secure knowing that
my important files are in a safe place.
Anyone considering this drive should be aware that the product description contains a misleading statement! The product description gives the impression that a USB 2.0 connection (the type used by this drive) is among the fastest available. In reality, the three other common connection types used by external drives (firewire 400, firewire 800, and eSata) are all faster than USB 2.0. See a May 2007 macworld magazine article for more info.
This is the second LaCie F.A. Porsche 320GB external drive that I have purchased, and I have been very pleased with both of them.
I am currently using one of them formatted FAT32 on a CentOS Linux server and the other as secondary storage for my Macbook Pro (formatted HFS+). I had previously been using one formatted NTFS on my old WinXP laptop.
After 6+ months, I have yet to detect any problems. The drives were plug-n-play, and you would only have to make changes if you decided not to go with the default FAT32 format.
However, the biggest selling point is the price. This is probably the most space you'll get in the $100-$130 range, and the best deal I've found for external storage. At this price, you are paying about $0.33 per GB. Contrast that with a 500GB drive at $250 for $0.50 per GB.
All-in-all, this is a great buy.
Just got this. Works fine - really there's not much to a powered USB drive. I don't even know the make of the drive inside, but for the price at the time I bought it, you couldn't do better. It works fine. Had to format it in NTFS, which took almost 2 hours, but it worked. I can copy over large files (4+ gigs) with no problem.
Cons:
1) It's not 320 Gigs. It's 298. Why the industry doesn't tell you actual # of gigs is beyond me. It's a marketing tactic I suppose. But that kind of sucks. Missing 20 gigs is like missing 5 files of DVDs I backed up. Lame.
2) Design. Wow. I don't care if this was "Exclusively designed by the renowned design agency Porsche Design GmbH" - it looks like a silver brick. OOOOO! How long did they take to design this gem? "Hey guys we have do design a hard drive." "I got it - how about a silver block? Genius!!" I don't think the design is anything special. I think it's weak they tout that as a strong point of the device, when in reality it looks like something I put together myself out of spare sheet metal.
But, it works. So I'm happy with it.
I bought this HD from reviews in Amazon. It has some good ratings. When it arrives, I was a little bit disappointed at the size of it.
It is a hazzle when you have to find a power plug for it.
So far, only the physical side that has been bothering me. The functionality and durability is very high. I put it in check-in suitcase and fly all over the country every 3 days for the last 45 days and it still survives and work as fast and stable as new.
Not much of a complaint!
The heat is trapped inside the unit. With out the heat being trapped inside the unit, the failure rate is increased the longer it is on. If your using it just to back up files then turn it off its great. But again would not recommend for 24/7 use.
Nothing fancy about the design of this USB drive, but the performance is excellent. I've had mine in operation for over a year now, ever since the other brand (the unnamed ones who make zip drives) crapped out on me in just a few months, and lost nearly 250 meg of fansubbed anime.
When I bought my computer in 2005, I had no way of knowing that twin 160 Gig hard drives was not enought these days. After all my Win98 machine had been going for 7 years, and it only had 15 Gig of space. You quickly find out that with DVR's for media center, music (which I don't personally download) and video's for anime, tv programs, or just fun take up massive amounts of drive space. A good USB drive is needed, and so far so good with the LaCie.
The LaCie is easy to use and connect, very quiet and efficient, gives off little heat, and as you can see, looks just like a retangular metal brick. It has endured my overnight downloading, and watching and deleting videos for over a year now with no complaints. Sometimes USB HD's have problems if not spun down in a computer shutdown. This one never has any problem. On several occasions due to storms or computer glitches, the computer has reboot, even with the download bit torrent client running, the LaCie does not loose it's reference at all and comes back accurately when the system is brought back up, that's another thing my other unit couldn't do all the time.
I believe this drive is the perfect solution if you want to add one of those new digital tuners to your PC. 320 Gig is enough for even a lot of HD programs, and enough for hundreds of non-HD stuff. While I don't have an HD tuner, so I can't personally verify this, my experience with high grade avi files and divx files tells me you should be able to download and watch on this unit at the same time. The only problem comes if you are running too many downloads, but even there I believe the processor becomes the bottleneck, not the LaCie.
i know you are not supposed to drop electronics, but i've had ipods, cell phones, cameras and other items fall and still work. this one, new out of the box, fell from about a foot high and stopped working right away. i expect things to be sturdy and resilient and resist the impacts of everyday life.

But it really doesn't deserve a 5 yet.
solid for the warratny period and then the hard drive wont kick in when you plug it in and want to get your data back. it hums but the usb is never recognized. i dont know if data is lost or just inaccesible.
There might be bigger drivers for the same price, but don't be coaxed by it.

unlike most tech gadgets that are a little outdated, this product stands in nearly every aspect.
1. the USB cable is too short
2. the power cord entrance initially seemed to be unstable, but the problem was that it was necessary to do a significant pressure to have it plugged properly.
3. The led in the front seems to be a little bit displaced.
4. Data Transfer is a little bit slow.
5. The Backup program requires a lot of memory to run and might not be very functional, maybe I still need to explore it, but it won't update existing files i.e. for daily back ups. Instead it will create a new folder and repeat all files. I found it best to use it without the program, just as an additional drive mirroring my computer.
298(of 320) for just $120, is great! it came ready to use as soon as you unpack it. I want 2 more of this one as soon as i save the money. Highly recomended!
First external harddrve i've owned but seriously so simple to use. I've already used over half of the space and seriously couldn't bring myself to even consider buying a different kind of external harddrive. LaCie F.A. Porsche 320 GB hard drive was plug usb cord into usb port plug in the power unit and move files from computer to external harddrive. I couldn't tell you how fast it is to upload but it didn't take me but about 25 minutes to get 120 GB onto it. Either way you should invest in an external harddrive from LaCie.
I got the external hard drive a couple of month ago. It is sleek and works great. Good value for the price!!!
I picked up a LaCie external 320GB drive lately, and it is working well. I have two Western Digital external drives, and both have served well. This drive was on a special at a local store -- under one hundred dollars -- so I couldn't pass it up.
This LaCie has a much smaller form factor than either WD drive.
It doesn't run too hot: after reformatting it to NTFS, it was only lukewarm. Not bad. For the most part, it feels well made.
It identifies on my Win XP Pro system as a Seagate 320GB drive. Seagate makes some decent hard drives, so if that's what LaCie has in this unit, it's a great deal.
It's quiet. There is a faint hum, but I've never heard a hard drive that is quieter.
The only thing I'd change is LaCie's proprietary power cord/plug. It doesn't feel that snug in the back of the drive. That's a minor quibble, though.
im not a computer whiz, and i know there are some system information things that need to be stored on hard drives that take up some space, but I just got this drive today and the max capacity is 298 GB. 22 GB seems like alot for system data. Oh, and the USB wire it comes with is very short. Probably a foot long.
Works wonderfully. Great Price. Easy to transport and built solid.
Set up easy. Works fine out of the box. No problems at all.
I am concerned when a manufacturer offers no warranty. This product requires that you buy a warranty? When a manufacturer can't stand behind their product i'm a little concerned.
